(NBC) - Two baby manatees were rescued in the Florida Keys on Sunday after their mother was found dead.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officials say they received word of the dead manatee on the bayside of Tavernier.

Dolphin Research Center Marine Mammal experts confirmed the death and realized the manatee resided in an area where twin manatee calves were born in May.

FWC personnel rescued the manatees and brought them to the Miami Seaquarium for examination, rehabilitation and a hopeful future release.

The mother is believed to have been killed by a boat strike, but officials are performing a necropsy to determine the exact cause of death.
