Using a hangar at the Treasure Coast International Airport as a backdrop, the St. Lucie County School District kicked off its early literacy initiative Tuesday. It's called “St. Lucie Soars.”
It’s an effort focused on kids from kindergarten through third grade. The goal is to bring in volunteers and mentors to close the gap on third grade literacy.
“Third grade is the most important grade in school. If children don’t master literacy by that time, it will have a detrimental impact on them for the rest of their lives," said St. Lucie County Superintendent Wayne Gent.
Right now, St. Lucie County’s third graders have a 46% proficiency rate. That’s up from last year, but still below the statewide average of 54-percent.
If you can spare an hour a week, you can make a huge difference in a child’s life.
