PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.-- Students in Port St. Lucie are taking part in a recycling project, that can also renew friendships.

At Village Green Elementary, they debuted their new “buddy bench” Monday.

The school was one of four in the county to get the benches to mark America Recycles Day.

Students collected plastic bottle caps in the spring to reach a goal of 200 lbs.

Those caps were then shipped out-of-state to be turned into the benches.

"Also a chance to make friends if you feel you’re being bullied. You can sit down and it tells people you need a friend to sit down with you and have a conversation," said fifth-grade student Madeline Poli.

Five more schools are working with Keep Port St. Lucie Beautifulto get their own buddy benches for next school year.
