ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. -- An Okeechobee woman died Wednesday morning after crashing into a canal in St. Lucie County.
Florida Highway Patrol says 42-year-old Shannon Wakelee was driving a 2013 Ford Focus eastbound on State Road 70 at 6:36 a.m., when her vehicle traveled through the grass median and across the westbound lanes of traffic.
Wakelee's car continued across the northern grass shoulder and into a canal, where it became completely submerged under water with Wakelee at the wheel.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
