Police said an officer shot and killed a suspect in Fort Pierce Thursday night.
Responding to a disturbance call in the 100 block of Alma Court police say the suspect was attacking another person with a weapon.
The officer shot the suspect who died at the scene, police said.
The victim is hospitalized in critical condition.
Police say the officer was not injured and is currently on administrative leave.
"This goes to show that, when it comes to our officers, their life is always on the line and we put our lives on the line for the protection of others and this is an example of that," Fort Pierce Police Chief Diane Hobley-Burney said in a statement.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the case.
