A suspect is in custody following a shooting Wednesday night in Fort Pierce.

Police accuse Dealmas Johnson of shooting Travis Whitfield in the 1900 block of Avenue E.

Whitfield told police he had asked Johnson, whom he referred to as “Dig Man,” or “Old Man Dig,” for a ride but was refused. After that there was a verbal altercation and as Whitfield said he turned away he heard a popping noise, according to an arrest affidavit.

Whitfield was hit once in the stomach.

Later at a hospital Whitfield identified Johnson in a photo lineup, according to the police report.

Investigators found Johnson who claimed Whitfield asked him for a ride but hit Johnson in the mouth when Johnson said he was busy.

At that point Johnson pulled out his gun, according to the arrest affidavit, and said he was tired of being disrespected and did what he had to do.

Johnson, who the report says was convicted in 2000 for possession, sale and manufacturing cocaine, was arrested.

He’s charged with attempted homicide and possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon.
