It’s been one year since a 2-year-old girl was shot and killed by a drive by shooter passing by her home in Fort Pierce.

For the first time her mother is speaking out with a desperate plea for someone to help close the case.

The death of Ma’Keila Burkes has carried the highest reward on Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers for the last year. It is $10,000.

It’s also been a case Fort Pierce Police Chief Diane Hobley-Burney has made a priority to solve.

Fort Pierce detectives say they have interviewed at least 50 people over the last year however they have not been able to secure enough evidence to arrest anyone.

Ma’Keila’s mom Melissa hopes that changes this year. “I still feel like it was yesterday to be honest. I cry every day, I cry every day. I cry every day. This isn’t something that I can just get over. I just want y’all to say something. Please.”

Detectives say there is a fear of retaliation in the community that they are battling.

Ma’Keila’s family says victims’ advocates and detectives are in touch with them weekly to give them any updates in the case.
