FORT PIERCE, Fla.-- A Fort Pierce police officer who tried to help a man in apparent distress had his patrol car taken instead, according to police.
It happened Friday morning near Delaware Avenue and U.S. 1 just after 5:30, police said.
The man, 22, was in the intersection so the officer stopped, turned on his emergency lights and approached the man to find out what was wrong, authorities said.
The man then jumped into the car and took off, police said.
Other officers followed and caught up with him after he drove into a yard in Vero Beach, the department said.
The man was not hurt and there was no property damage, the investigation revealed.
The man was taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to police.
