A new scam is targeting utility customers on the Treasure Coast and there are a few things customers need to know to protect their identity.

The Fort Pierce Utilities Authority says phone scammers are posing as employees telling customers their account is overdue and that they need to pay up.

FPAU says the scammers instruct the customer to then call a phone number provided by them.

That's when they try to get personal information such as your credit card or bank account numbers.

FPAU warns customers not to fall for it and hang up immediately.

If you have any questions about your account, you should call FPAU directly at 772-466-1600.

Use the FPUA main number ONLY to be connected with an authentic FPUA customer service representative. You can also check the status of your account online at www.FPUA.com

If you are a registered, choose the Manage My Account option. If you do not have an online account, choose the Register Now option.
