The search continued Monday for the person who killed a White City grandmother and badly injured her son in a machete attack over the weekend.
Monday, dive teams searched the canals and waterways around Sheila Hamner’s home for evidence.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office says someone attacked Hamner and her son Kenny Hamner with a machete Saturday afternoon.
Detectives say they have now expanded the search area and scene to include the properties near the home.
Sheriff Ken Mascara told reporters he does not think this was a random attack.
"We feel that maybe this house was targeted for whatever reason," said the Sheriff.
The deadly attack still comes as disbelief to so many in the community who knew the family.
“Sheila will leave behind a legacy of her family, her children. And Kenny and his family are very strong, and they’ll have a lot of people rally around them and get them through his,” said Deedee Maymard, a longtime friend of the family.
Kenny Hamner, who survived the attack, remains in the hospital. Detectives are hoping to get a statement from him soon.
Sheila worked for the St. Lucie County School District for nearly three decades.
In a statement the district said, “St. Lucie Public Schools extends its deepest sympathy to the families and loved ones of Sheila Hamner who served as a valued member of the District for 28 years before retiring in 2005. She spent the vast majority of her years as a bookkeeper at Dan McCarty Middle School where she was a positive influence on adults and students alike.”
The sheriff said the Medical Examiner’s Office was planning to do the autopsy on Sheila Hamner on Monday.,
