The Big Heart Brigade of the Treasure Coast is making sure people in need get a homemade Thanksgiving meal. Joe Payne is with the St. Lucie County Fire District.
"A lot of times people can't afford to not only get their meals but due to health reasons they are not able to get out."
Fire Chief Nate Spera says it's a joint effort.
"When I first got involved, I was amazed at how many people in our community are in that situation. And that's how we started was with the shut-ins to ensure we were getting out there. You may be the only person that they see on thanksgiving Day."
They're hoping Thanksgiving will be special for hundreds of people in need.
Chief Spera said, "This is one of the many ways our firefighters can give back to the community and they do it with gusto. One of the things that we take pride in here is service doesn't stop at the end of a shift."
