Belt weather kit helps firefighters strategize

Firefighters continue to monitor several active fires across the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee County.

Fortunately, there were no new reports of any major fires Tuesday. However, as these dry conditions continue, the threat of fire activity remains high.

As firefighters took us up close to a 36-acre fire in St. Lucie County, we got our first look at some important equipment firefighters keep with them to help them battle the flames and stay safe.

Those tools help them measure weather elements, like humidity and wind speed. It’s important information that factors into determining how to fight the fires.

“It really will go into strategies and tactics when it comes to fighting that fire,” said Senior Forest Ranger Jeff Curl.
Curl says the humidity and winds he’s been seeing is fairly common for this time of year.

He says the main factor for the increased fire activity continues to be the drought index.

“That lack of rainfall is producing more fires,” said Curl.
