PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — Omni Middle School teacher Helene Mayton in Boca Raton is a mentor to her students.
"Each child is unique so for each child I try to find something special that they need from me that I can give them to help them achieve their goals."
One of those students is 12-years-old Evan Greenfield, a seventh grader.
"She really supported me when I was doing the essay and tried to help with the essay and said if there's anything that I can do to help you, please let me know."
Evan experienced bullying when he was in sixth grade. He shared his story in the "Do The Write Thing" contest, offering hope to other kids who are bullied.
"I've been bullied twice in my life it's because of my hand I only have four fingers on my right hand. Because I was born without my finger and a couple of bones that connect to your wrist. Just feel confident in yourself, don't let them get to you because the only opinion that matters is yours."
Evan gets good grades in school and he's an avid tennis player.
"Feel good about yourself. there's nothing wrong with you. If you are different then you're different. It's not a big deal because being different means you are unique. Being unique is a gift that everybody has."
More than 300 kids will be at an awards ceremony tomorrow at the South Florida Fairgrounds. Two students from the finalists will go to Washington, D.C. to represent Palm Beach County.
