PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. -- A monthlong event called the Palm Beach Commuter Challenge is encouraging all commuters in Palm Beach County to use alternate methods of transportation. Those methods include walking, biking, carpooling or taking the trolley to work instead of driving.
Local businesses, schools and city employees are rising to the challenge.
Lisa Herrmann is leading the city of Delray Beach team. "If you can call it a team," Herrmann said. "So far it's just me. Anybody else from the city can sign up and join the same team, so that would be nice to have some help."
Herrmann is on the leaderboard twice. She's in second individually and her team of one is currently in third place trailing behind the city of West Palm Beach team lead by Alex Hansen. A team that's growing in size.
"Actually it just went up to 14 in the last, the numbers are increasing over the last couple of hours," Hansen explained. "I hope they have as many people as participating, but I'm pretty certain that they're not going to be able to beat West Palm Beach.
Right now the city of Boca Raton is not even on the leaderboard.
"You need to step it up," Herrmann said laughing.
At the end of the competition the top team within each business-size category with the most miles commuted for work will be announced as winners and receive a prize. Top overall individual commuters will also be recognized.
