BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. -- Town Square is being built as Boynton Beach’s new downtown.

The name was picked 20 years when the project planning started. But Boynton’s mayor wants to change the name before the project is done.

“We are not a town and it is not a square,” said Boynton Beach Mayor Steven Grant.

Grant proposed the name change at a commission meeting in October. People in town had mixed feelings on changing the decades-old Town Square name.

“I see no point in changing it, there has been enough change with the building,” said Denise Hilbert.

Peyton Ibra wants something different, “Because it is boring.”

Some ideas from views on Facebook were “City Center,” “City Square,” or “Downtown Boynton.”

Grant said he does not worry about confusing people by changing the name. “Because of what happened with CityPlace being renamed Rosemary Square,” he said. Grant said he would like to give the pubic the change to vote on a final name.

City commissioners are expected to discuss the name change in November.
