Age is just a number, right? That’s certainly the case for one Bethesda Hospital volunteer, who is going strong as she approached her 100th birthday.
Beulah Gladstone is a volunteer at the hospital. She meets and greets everyone who comes to the front desk
This has been her post two days a week for the last 17 years.
However, Wednesday wasn’t just any ordinary day. Beulah Gladstone is about to turn 100 years young.
The hospital staff decided to surprise one of its most dedicated team members.
“When I walked in and saw all these people, I thought oh my God, I don’t believe it,” said Gladstone.
Beulah was born in 1916 in New York also raised there. She eventually moved down to Florida, has four kids,17 grandchildren including the spouses and now 15 great-grandchildren.
It’s actually a funny story how Beulah came to volunteer at Bethesda Hospital.
“If you become a volunteer, you could get a discount in the fitness center,” said Gladstone.
But volunteering became her calling. Just ask any of the other volunteers who work with her.
“Everyone stops and kisses her and wants to bring her coffee. It’s wonderful,” said Peggy Martinez, a fellow volunteer.
Even just a few days shy of her 100th birthday, you can still find Beulah helping others around the hospital.
“I just love meeting people and talking to people and the employees. Everyone’s so wonderful. It’s like a big family,” said Gladstone.
Beulah officially turns 100 on Sunday.
