If you thought you were patriotic, it’s time to meet the “Fourth of July Guy.”

For the past several years, Angelo Sands has covered his Boca Raton yard in miniature American flags. This year was no different.

The retired golf coach at Florida Atlantic University said he loves his country and started the tradition as a way to help people connect with the holiday. He admitted it started off small and and grown to a scene that covers nearly all the green of his grass in red, white and blue; earning him the nickname, courtesy of his son-in-law.

Each year he meets someone new, like a military member last year who completed two tours in the Middle East and brought his family to see Sands’ display.

“My wife gave him and the kids red, white and blue cupcakes, we gave each of the kids flags. When something like that happens, you know what you’re doing has a purpose,” Sands explained.

Sands spent the afternoon in a red, white and blue onesie, blasting patriotic music, while 100 or so of his friends and family hung out in the yard holding signs encouraging divers along NW 2nd Avenue to honk their horns.

The whole yard will be cleaned up before the fireworks start.
