A 24-year-old Delray Beach man was arrested after police say he drove his white Chevy SUV onto a packed Boca Raton beach Thursday morning.

The incident happened along the 100 block of S. Ocean Boulevard.

Responding officers located the SUV at the shoreline with its tire submerged in sand, where numerous people were walking around the vehicle and a group of people were laying on the beach close to the vehicle.

Officials say Wilkey used the fire department's emergency entrance to drive onto the shoreline. He drove with a suspended license.

According to an arrest report, Wilkey told officers he drove onto the beach to find a can of tobacco he had left there.

The report said officers explained to Wilkey about the danger of driving a vehicle on the beach, but he appeared to have no sympathy.

Wilkey was arrested for reckless driving, operating a vehicle on a coastal beach and having a suspended license with knowledge. He was transported to the Palm Beach County Jail and released later that day.
