The police department at Florida Atlantic University now has four-legged officers on patrol.

The department added K9s to the force this semester. The three dogs will sniff for bombs and drugs on the Boca Raton campus.

The interim chief said he expects more traffic through campus once FDOT completes a new exit connecting I-95 to Spanish River Boulevard on the campus’ north side.

Having the dogs will improve safety on campus.

“We’re looking to make sure we have a safe environment for our students and staff. That once they come on, they know we’re trying to do everything we can to make sure our campus is safe,” said Interim Chief Sean Brammer.

All three German Shepherds were donated to the department.

Furry Friends Pet Rescue in Jupiter donated Max. Outlier Kennels in Ocala donated Odin. And a private donor gave Zeus to the department.

The police department is only responsible for paying for veterinarian and food bills.
