Workers at Sunflower Landscaping made a gruesome discovery Monday morning.
Arriving to work, some employees spotted two dead dogs lying in the road near U.S. 441, just south of Atlantic Avenue in suburban Delray Beach.
Witnesses said that two pit bulls appeared to have died from gunshot wounds.
Initial reports from responding law enforcement said the two pitbulls might have been shot. Later, forensic veterinarians at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control determined that the dogs were not shot but may have been hit by cars and left on the side of 441.
One of the dogs was a female, the other was a male, according to witnesses.
The female appeared to also have scratches on her face and body, and a broken leg, witnesses said.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case, and Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control is assisting with the investigation.
The dogs may have been dumped at that location over the weekend.
If you know anything about the crime, you're urged to contact Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County.
This story was updated to clarify that the dogs may have been hit by cars and not shot.
