WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- A South Florida teen has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for accidentally shooting and killing his friend.

The Palm Beach Post reports that the teen was sentenced Tuesday. He was convicted in August of manslaughter, improper exhibition of a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a minor.

Authorities say 18-year-old Feliciano Sabates was fatally shot at the 17-year-old boy's Palm Beach Gardens apartment in August 2014.

The teen initially told police that Sabates was shot by an unknown black man, but another friend at the apartment told police that the teen had been pointing the gun at people when it went off and hit Sabates.

The teen eventually confessed and told police he had been smoking marijuana and drinking before the shooting.
