A Palm Beach Gardens family is living the American dream thanks to an organization that helps wounded veterans and their families.
The shutters went up today on the home in Palm Beach Gardens. “It's really nice to be to a point where you can breathe,” said Christina Verporter, who’s living in the home with her mom and younger sister.
Verporter and her family couldn't be more grateful to finally have a place of their own. “You sit here and you think how you do put it into words and you can't. It's that phenomenal,” Verporter explained.
Palm Beach Troop Support, a ministry that helps the families of wounded veterans, donated the home to the family. Verporter’s stepdad is a retired marine suffering from PTSD.
“There's a lot of vets out there that don't get close to what they deserve and some of the people we've helped have come close to dying right there at the VA when they don't get the help they need,” said Traynter Turpin, who runs Palm Beach Troop Support and served in the Navy.
Turpin and a team of volunteers rehabbed the home. “You had to have an open mind,” said Turpin.
Pictures show the condition just three months ago. There were holes in the floor, walls and roof. “There's rodents, cockroaches, it was just deplorable conditions,” said Turpin.
Now a 180. There’s a new kitchen, floors and bedrooms. A big thank you to a hero for his sacrifice.
“I'm proud of him and proud of the commitment he made for our country,” said Verporter about her stepfather.
The home will be completed in about two weeks. Some final repairs and finishing touches still to be done.
