JUPITER, Fla. — The medical community in Jupiter is growing. Plans to bring a life sciences accelerator to Jupiter were unveiled today in what town leaders say is a vital piece to making Jupiter a center for life science research and business.
Beacon Pharmaceutical is investing $80 million for a 200,000 square foot facility at Indiantown Rd. and the Turnpike.
On Wednesday morning, town leaders announced a partnership with Beacon Pharmaceutical on a project to support local start-ups and attract new health care companies to the area.
"What Beacon will bring to Jupiter will support the local economy with jobs and commerce, and bring their important discoveries to the entire world," said Jupiter Mayor Todd Wodraska at a news conference.
The goal is to expand the Palm Beach County Life Sciences community and improve medical research and technology.
"Beacon Pharmaceutical will be the home of companies that would like to grow," said Nancy Torres Kaufman, the Executive Chairwoman of Beacon Pharmaceutical. When you talk about the life sciences industry you’re attracting from scientists to engineers to teachers to interpreters.”
Torres Kaufman said the company is planning to build a 150,000 square foot "accelerator" facility in Jupiter to house 50 start-up medical companies. The environment at the state-of-the-art lab space would be conducive to helping those companies grow and make health care advancements, she said.
"We needed to find the missing piece of the puzzle," said Mayor Wodraska. "The piece that offers the research and development companies the tools and services they need to bring their products to market."
Jupiter officials, business leaders from Palm Beach County, and life science stakeholders all attended Wednesday's news conference.
