A 20-year-old Stuart man was killed in an early-morning crash Sunday.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Sergio Galarza driving a 2005 Nissan Maxima eastbound at 4:55 a.m. on SE Hawthorne Street at SE Evergreen Avenue, lost control and struck a tree.

The car then rotated counter clockwise and struck a second tree with its right side, causing the vehicle to rotate clockwise and travel in a northeasterly direction.

Galarza was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the vehicle, Guillermo Jaramillo, 26, sustained critical injuries and was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
