A Stuart doctor is facing more than two dozen counts of health care fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.
The government said 48-year-old Sheetal Kanar Kumar, M.D., of Advanced Healthcare for Women, was arraigned on 26 counts during an appearance in federal court.
The indictment alleges that Dr. Kumar submitted or caused the fraudulent submission of claims to Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance companies between January of 2014 and July of 2017.
Those claims, for services that were not provided, exceeded $925,000, the U.S. Attorney said.
Dr. Kumar entered a not guilty plea in court, according to her attorney Richard Kibbey.
"It's indeed disappointing that the federal government has elected to elevate honestly-made billing errors to a criminal level. Dr. Kumar intends to vigorously contest the accusations brought against her and she looks forward to being acquitted of all charges," Kibbey said in a statement.
Dr. Kumar will face trial on November 13 in Fort Pierce.
