VERO BEACH, Fla. — As the U.S. celebrates its 250th anniversary, Florida is doing its part to be a part of the festivities.
Gov. Ron DeSantis visited Vero Beach on Friday morning, speaking at the city's The Heritage Center.
During his visit to the Treasure Coast, the governor announced that George Washington's birthday (Presidents Day) will be officially recognized as a state holiday.
"Our state offices will be closed. Our state employees will be able to have the day off," DeSantis said. "We're going to have a series of events that weekend that are going to help celebrate the birthday of George Washington. So first, we're partnering with NASCAR to sponsor the America 250 Florida Duel at Daytona. So it's going to be an exciting race to start a Speed Week to celebrate Florida's rich history."
For Washington's Birthday Weekend from Feb. 12-16, Floridians can enjoy free admission to all state parks and other state-owned public lands.
The state is also launching an "America 250 Florida" essay contest, allowing students throughout the state to enter for the chance to receive a scholarship to any of our state colleges or universities.
DeSantis also said they are planning a series of additional events, exhibits and opportunities statewide for Floridians to celebrate the "Spirit of ’76."
Visit the "America 250" Florida website for more on events related to the state's year-long commemoration of America's 250th birthday.
This year marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of these United States. Our America 250 Florida celebrations are already underway—and today, I was proud to announce more ways we are highlighting Florida’s contributions to our nation’s founding and development.
