Business prepares people for active shooters

Just as many businesses have fire drills, the owner of Guns and Range Training Center in West Palm Beach says companies should also have drills for active shooters.

"It is sad, but our society needs to start doing drills," owner Alex Shkop said.

In a warehouse behind his West Palm Beach gun shop, Shkop trains small business owners and their employees how to take down an active shooter.

"We teach them what they can do. So God forbid something like this happens, your body reacts instead of freezing and going into panic mode," Shkop said.

Shkop says it is all about training so the situation doesn't shock your system.

He hires former military personnel to help teach the classes.

"You don't want to be sitting there problem solving if this happens. You need to know what to do," trainer James Benz said.

Because many offices don't allow guns, the trainers use simulations where only the bad guy is armed.

They teach participants to try to run and hide, but also to fight as a last resort.

"If you can't run away and you can't hide and your hiding spot is compromised, you have to fight. And that is the only way to survive," Shkop said.

Shkop teaches people to take down a shooter if that is the only option.

"If there are four or five of you cornered, the only option is to overpower the intruder," Shkop said.

The classes run about $100 an hour.
