WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. --The teen accused of stabbing a classmate at Royal Palm Beach High School Wednesdaywill remain in custody for the time being.
The 16-year old went before a judge for a detention hearing Thursday.
The judge ordered the suspect to stay in a juvenile facility for three weeks. During that time the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office will decide whether to charge him as an adult.
The teen's family was in court today. His mother was seen crying as she left.
The judge ordered the teen suspect not to make any contact with the victim.
His attorney, NewsChannel 5 Legal Analyst Michelle Suskauer, spoke on behalf of the family at court. "We're asked not to reach out to his family. Certainly they would love to do that because their heart is breaking. These kids have been friends for a while. Their families have been very friendly. This is not a stranger."
The victim was last reported in stable condition.
The suspect's attorney says her client does not have a prior criminal record.
