WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Bill Bucklew loves to talk about the 1969 mission to the Moon.
Bucklew was a teen when Apollo 11 set out on a mission to land on the Moon.
"On that date in July 1969, believe it or not I was on my way out of the state of Florida," said Bucklew. "My mother, my brother, and I were driving north to Ohio, but we happened to be going by the Kennedy Space Center when all of the people were coming in."
Bucklew's family paid 10 cents to buy a newspaper in 1969. He still has the paper, though it's a bit worn. But the paper has several articles describing the Moon mission.
"The space program was a part of your life. And you just lived it every day and it was amazing," said Bucklew.
Bob Sheff also remembers where he was in 1969.
"For the landing, I was with a friend out on Lake Michigan on a sailboat having a lovely day," said Sheff.
As people recall where they were 50 years ago, Melinda Grenz with the South Florida Science Center said they are hosting activities to make sure young minds also have a love for space exploration.
"It's just really neat to see them get inspired and want to learn more about it," said Grenz.
10-year-old Carissa Maule told WPTV her father was born on this day.
"I want to see them go to a different planet and discover a different planet that no one has ever discovered before," said Maule.
