Protecting your gift cards this holiday season

If you buy and send gift cards from the digital retailer Gyft, you might want to reset your password after a reported data breach.

Gyft did not disclose how many accounts were affected, but an insider said the figure was a single-digit percentage of customers.

Gift cards are the number one gift this holiday season, so here is some advice from WPTV tech expert, Alan Crowetz.

"Be extra careful with gift cards. They're basically cash. There's no way of tracking them, and yet, they're the holy grail to hackers because they're so exposed and easy to get," sad Crowetz.

Here are some tips:

  • Track your card balance, even write it on the back
  • Protect that gift car
  • Make sure no one tampered with it or placed a sticker on it
  • Avoid mailing a gift card, it's like mailing cash
  • Be aware, use different passwords always.
