Proposed parking meters to help homeless in WPB

West Palm Beach is getting creative to help find housing for the homeless.

If approved by the City Commission on Monday, ten orange parking meters will be placed around downtown. Loose change collected will be directed to the Palm Beach County Homeless Coalition to fund permanent housing for the homeless.

“It’s really better than giving the homeless money directly or a panhandler money directly,” Mayor Jeri Muoio said. “It’s a great program, it has been done in many other cities.”

The meters are like donation boxes. The project will not cost the city anything. The homeless coalition will be funding their upkeep and maintenance.
