Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Hegele has been sentenced for reckless driving. He was sentenced to 5 years probation, 364 days in jail and community service.

Hegele was convicted of driving recklessly when he crashed into a Smart car, seriously injuring the driver, Harry Deshommes.

A jury found Hegele guilty of reckless driving in a May 2016 crash. The judge ordered Hegele to be taken into custody immediately after the trial.

The defense said they felt the ruling was fair.

Deshommes sister said she also felt the ruling was fair.

“Mr. Hegele has to regard for the law and I hope he is rehabilitated and he will be different,” said Gina Desrouleaux.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the crash and Hegele has been on unpaid administrative leave from the department.
