Jury selection in the Dontrell Stephens Federal civil trial took most of the day Monday.

Stephens was shot by Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy Adams Lin in September 2013.

The deputy followed the then 20-year-old on his bicycle.

According to the deputy, Stephens had committed a bike violation.

Moments after, Stephens can be seen getting off his bike. The deputy shoots him four times.

Turns out, Stephens had nothing in his hand but a cell phone.

The deputy says what you can't see is a move by Stephens that made the deputy fear for his life.

Potential jurors inside the Federal Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale were questioned Monday about other police involved shootings making headlines around the country.

A pool of potential jurors were asked if they've heard about the recent cases, and all of them raised their hands.

Opening statements are expected to start on Tuesday morning.

Sergeant Lin was in the courtroom, but Stephens was not.

His attorney says he will testify and tell his story for the first time publicly during the trial.
