The Palm Beach Zoo reopened its doors to the public Monday morning following the incident involving a Malayan tiger last Friday. 38-year-old Lead Keeper Stacey Konwiser tragically lost her life. She had been a keeper at Palm Beach Zoo for just over three years.
“Stacey was like a sister to many. We have lost a member of our zoo family. To say that we are grieving, to say that we are mourning, it is difficult to even put into words,” Zoo spokeswoman Naki Carter said during a press conference on Sunday.
“For those who are leaving those kind words [on Facebook] during a time of grief and mourning for us, people are distraught. While Stacey is not here, her memory will live on. While she is gone, she will never be forgotten,” Carter added.
The outpouring of support and compassion from the West Palm community and across the country has been evidenced by hundreds of comments and posts on Facebook as people from all over the world have expressed their condolences upon hearing the tragic news.
