WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The signs are everywhere in downtown West Palm Beach, “One Way,” “Do Not Enter,” “No Left Turn,” but somehow drivers are still heading the wrong way down one way streets.
Aaron Wormus works on Clematis Street and says he sees a lot of confused drivers.
“There's also a lot of activity when people just do something really stupid,” Wormus explained. “And you have horns and these are the things that are never reported. I see that a couple times a week.”
Just yesterday Wormus snapped a photo of the aftermath of a wrong-way crash downtown. He says a car turned from Dixie Highway to Clematis Street using the wrong lane on a one-way street.
“People who are just driving through, not realizing maybe that they're on a two-way street,” Wormus explained. “Not realizing there's someone in their blind spot who's gonna hit them if they decide to cut in front of them.”
West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio says she's working on a plan that could alleviate the one-way street issue down the road.
“The recommendation from our walkability study that was done is to make them two-ways, that is something we're going to pursue,” Muoio explained.
Until then drivers will have to rely on the signs.
“People need to be careful about where they're turning, I don't know what else I can say about having crashes,” Muoio said. “I'm sorry to hear that of course. It's a little tricky with the one way streets.”
Muoio says the county determines whether roads are one-way or two-way, particularly with Dixie Highway since it’s a state road. Right now there is not time line for the change.
