WELLINGTON, Fla.- Mom Laurie and her son, Tomas, are gearing up for the new school year.

“I know it's going to be crazy!” said Laurie Byrd, of West Palm Beach.

She’s thinking about switching Tomas to a charter school next year. She came to WPTV’s Back to School expo for information on different schools.

“Ask them some questions on what their curriculum is, what is their school rating [is] if they have one, what are their hours,” said Laurie.

Hundreds of people packed the Mall at Wellington Green for NewsChannel 5’s event during the only tax-free weekend of the year.

“We wanted to buy clothes for school,” said Tgsnette Shafran, of Lake Worth, who was shopping with her daughter, Jackie.

The expo had cooking demos and booths about everything from health to public safety. This was the first time it was spread out across the mall.

Morning anchors Ashleigh Walters and Mike Trim were the hosts at the Grand Court.

“We always love to meet the viewers,” said Ashleigh. “It's really fun for us.” Mike added, “Plenty of selfies today.”

Kids and parents learned about eating healthy and even tried out their hand at forecasting with Storm Team Meteorologist Tyler Mauldin.

“I want them to understand and appreciate how hard our job is as meteorologists,” said Tyler.

For 8-year-old Tomas, being here made him excited to start school.

“I really want to make new friends and I hope it's a fun year.”
