PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — Meet a woman on a mission.
"We do, at some point, have to sit down and talk about that," said Dr. Kathleen Spears.
Dr. Spears is the newest CEO of Young Women’s Christian Association of Palm Beach County, also known as YWCA.
"All of our programs are aimed at accomplishing our mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity," said Dr. Spears.
This month, Dr. Spears and her team are raising awareness about domestic violence.
"It’s something that just happens in ways that we can never imagine, and fleeing it is not as simple as, get out of that relationship, he’s abusing you," said Dr. Spears. "There’s so much more to it. It’s so much more complicated."
The YWCA runs one of two domestic violence shelters in Palm Beach County.
Dr. Spears, a Texas native who has decades of experience working on social justice issues, said she’s hoping with this new title she can change the conversation about domestic violence.
"That there is hope, and there is an opportunity for you to change your life, and you don’t have to continue to live that way because everyone deserves to live with dignity and freedom," said Dr. Spears.
