Runoff election in Riviera ends in tie

A runoff election has ended in a tie and now the two candidates for the Riviera Beach District One City Council seat will have compete for the third time.

After no candidate received the required 50 percent plus 1 of the vote, the two top candidates, incumbent Bruce Guyton and challenger Lynne Hubbard had a runoff on Tuesday. Initial results showed Guyton won.

But after a Thursday afternoon recount the official results show a tie at 1,749 votes apiece.

By Palm Beach County election rules the winner would be decided by a coin flip, card draw, or straw draw. But Riviera Beach policy says the runoff must continue.

The next election is tentatively set for April 12.
