RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. — Future female engineers received some hands on training this weekend.

Students attended a two-day summer engineering program called "Empower Girls" at the Riviera Beach Clean Energy Center and Manatee Lagoon.

The goal is to help motivate the girls to pursue engineering careers while meeting Florida Power and Light’s female employees who have been through the process.

“I really see myself in them, and I wish I had had this when I was younger,” said FPL plant manager Annie Paskavitch.

“Engineering is all about how things work, and I like understanding something until I figure out just how it works, like every part of how it works,” said Kathrin Rogers, who attended the camp.

On Sunday, the girls learned about different types of energy and put together a snap circuit.

Over the weekend, they also built solar cars and had hands-on water chemistry testing.
