PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — As far as evictions go, there was something different about this one for Det. Erik Smith with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
"When I went to post the paperwork for Darcie, I noticed the place was immaculate on the outside and very well kept, which is kind of odd to me," Det. Smith said in an interview.
Darcie Coburn lost her job and car over the summer.
The mother of three had only 20 minutes left in the place she couldn’t afford. She grabbed her mom, dad, and brother’s ashes, and her son’s expensive medicine that had to be refrigerated.
"She’s sitting there in her little girl’s baby seat. The car seat, these urns and stuff. It was kind of heart felt," Det. Smith said.
Coburn understood she had to move out.
"I was sort of prepared for that,” she said. “But what I wasn’t prepared for was, um…"
Help. Real help.
With a holiday bow, PBSO gave her a car, and nearly $5,000.
"For my little one who’s five, who keeps asking, 'Mommy did you get a new car? Mommy did you get a new place?'" Coburn said.
The answer is yes.
“My kids are my world," Coburn said. "Whenever they see me struggle, I want them to see me still keep going because I don’t want them to feel like they can’t do that too."
