Lobster mini-season underway in Florida

and last updated

Lobster mini-season started at midnight Wednesday and divers wasted no time getting out on the water to hunt for the crustaceans.

Regulations allow divers to catch 12 lobsters per day, but they must be 3 inches from the lobster’s eyes to the beginning of its tail.

Only six lobsters can be caught per person, per day in Monroe County and Biscayne National Park.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says they will cite people not complying with the law and will be watching people trying to make multiple trips a day.

An estimated 60,000 divers are expected to take part in the mini season.

“Summertime is always a big time of the year. Families are on vacation, so this is when people come as a family and they want to do things on the water, and that’s what we’re known for,” said fishing captain Mike Mercado.

Lobster min-season ends Thursday.
