Girl, 11, drowns retrieving sister's backpack

A girl has died after she entered a retention pond Thursday night to retrieve her sister's backpack that was thrown in the water. 

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue said the incident occurred at Seminole Drive and Kewanee Road at Seminole Manor at 7:30 p.m.

The 11-year-old girl was pulled from the pond by a bystander who was flagged down.  

She was taken to JFK Medical Center but later pronounced dead, according to a news release from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.
