With Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputies behind him, Florida Governor Rick Scott signed a bill on Monday that’s designed to protect the families of fallen law enforcement and first responders.
The law now provides the beneficiary of the fallen with the individual's regular monthly salary for their lifetime.
This applies to all special risk class members in the Florida retirement system. Special risk individuals include law enforcement officers, firefighters, correctional officers, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, probation officers, and other employees whose job may put them at risk, according to the governor’s office.
The governor says the law will protect the families of the fallen. “Give peace of mind in case the worst thing happens that we lose another law enforcement officer. I hope we never lose another law enforcement officer in our state but I know the men and women in our state that provide law enforcement are doing a great job."
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw went on to say this is a game changer for families in times of tragedy.
