Laser pointing at planes on the rise

Pointing a laser at an airplane can cause serious havoc.

High-powered lasers can blind pilots and jeopardize their safety as well as the safety of the passengers aboard the plane.

Aiming a laser at an airplane is a crime, a crime that is on the rise.

In 2015 year to date almost 6,000 incidents were reported to the Federal Aviation Administration which is more than a 50% increase over 2014.

Of the reported laser misuses in 2015, 465 were from Florida.

Palm Beach International Airport had 26, so far this year.

We requested from the FAA the most recent data on the misuse of laser devices and mapped all the places that reported more than 10 incidents.

The map below shows the instances of reported laser misuse from 2010 to 2014.
