Homeless veterans in the area are getting a big boost, thanks to a nearly $1 million dollar grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs

Congresswoman Lois Frankel was on hand to present the big check to Stand Down in Lake Worth.

The organization provides housing and support for those who served our country.

Leaders say they are overwhelmed with the new funds that will help them find homes for about 200 veterans and their families.

"This is not a handout, this is a hand up, so our veterans can stand tall again, you know that pride that we carry when we're in uniform, that's the one we want to see when they're leaving our office," said Stand Down founder Roy Foster.

"To find a serviceman or woman sleeping under a park bench is a national disgrace. So the work that these folks are doing is just fantastic, it's what America is about," said U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel.

The Stand Down house provides transitional housing for men on site and has helped more than 2,500 vets.
