(KTRK/CNN) A contractor was caught on camera recently striking two dogs with a wrench at a home in Texas.
The man, who works for Star Company, a CenterPoint Energy contractor, is seen in the video walking into a family’s backyard.
The dogs appear to approach the man. As the dogs are close, the worker then strikes them with a wrench.
After learning about what happened, the dogs’ owner, Mike Wilcox, confronted the man.
"Why didn't you come knock on the door. We were home?" said Wilcox.
The contractor was at the home to disconnect service. A CenterPoint spokeswoman said in those cases, workers don't have to knock on the door.
"It absolutely would have made best sense to have knocked on the door, but our process today for disconnection for non-payment, is to go straight to the meter. We're extremely disappointed about this behavior and how it unfolded," said Leticia Lowe with CenterPoint Energy.
CenterPoint said as a result of this incident, it is evaluating its practices and will talk to the contractor..
The energy company said in no circumstance is it appropriate to strike an animal, even if the employee feels threatened.
As for the dogs, they're still recovering. One of the injured animals needed surgery on his jaw this week.
Wilcox says CenterPoint energy recently called him and offered to pay his veterinarian bills. He says those bills could reach the thousands of dollars.
