(WHAM/CNN) - A man suffered serious burns after his car exploded early Wednesday morning at a gas station in upstate New York.
Police said the man, identified as Igor Pataco, 44, of Greece, N.Y., had just filled a gas can and put it in his car when it burst into flames.
The explosion, which could be heard for miles, threw him backwards and caught him on fire.
The flames were so intense they melted the sign at the Rochester, N.Y., gas station.
Video shows Pataco rolling on the ground and able to put the flames out. Police said he is being treated for second- and third-degree burns.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire. It is unclear if the driver spilled gasoline inside the vehicle or it was just from the vapors.
