"Excellent job by the Ohio State University Emergency Management Team in immediately notifying students and faculty via social media with the message: "Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College," Trump said in a statement.

Ohio Governor John Kasich, who opposed Trump in the Republican primary, also released a statement.

"My thoughts are with the victims of this attack right now and I pray for their safety and recovery," Kasich said. "I am grateful for the professional, coordinated response from first responders whose efforts helped effectively contain this incident before further harm could be done."

Kasich added he was in touch with Ohio State University officials on offering government assistance.

Cavs forward LeBron James offered his support to Ohio State's campus two days after visiting campus for the football game between Ohio State and Michigan.

"Praying for all students on @OhioState campus!! Please find safely asap!!" James tweeted.

Just two days after a bitter rivalry game between Ohio State and Michigan, Michigan Athletics was among a number of rival schools that offered their support of Ohio State.
