There was a shootout in the Bronx early this morning between a graffiti suspect and three officers.

Authorities say the officers spotted two men spraying graffiti on a wall.

They chased the men.

An officer caught up with one of the suspects and during a struggle, investigators say the graffiti suspect pulled out a gun and shot at the officers at least three times.

All three officers returned fire hitting the suspect several times.

Investigators say they recovered the suspect's gun at the scene that was damaged during the gun fight.

"As the officer struggled with the man in an attempt to arrest him, the subject pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and fired at least three rounds at the officers. It was at this time that all three officers engaged the man, returning fire, striking him numerous times," said Chief Terence Monahan with the New York City Police Department.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The officers were not hurt.
