Fiat Chrysler recalls Jeep Wrangler SUVs, cites air bag issue

Fiat Chrysler has issued a recall of about a half-million Jeep Wrangler SUVs, citing air bags that may not inflate in a crash.

The recall – which covers Wranglers from the 2007 to 2010 model years -- is worldwide, according to Fox News.
In the U.S., another 7,400 models 2011-2016 are also affected.

The company says the issue can arise from excessive exposure to dust and dirt from off-road driving. Those situations can cause electrical problems in the steering column air bag wiring.

To date, Fiat Chrysler says it's not aware of any related injuries related to the issue, which was discovered through a company investigation.

In order to fix the problem, dealers will install a new steering wheel back cover and steering column shroud.
Customers will be notified when parts are available, the company said.
